Hotel Benefits
- Both: $600 ($300 semi-annually) towards Amex Travel FHR/Hotel Collection Bookings
- Both: Hotel Elite Status- Hilton Gold, Marriott Gold, Leaders Club Sterling Status
- Business: $200 Hilton ($50 quarterly)
$600 Hotel Credit
Get $600 annually in hotel credits on both the Consumer and Business card. These hotel credits are spilt into two semi-annual $300 credits that can be used towards a minimum one night stay at a Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) property or minimum two night stay at a Hotel Collection property.
These properties must be booked and prepaid in the Amex Travel Portal. Credits are issued as a statement credit once the charge is processed, but may take a few weeks to appear.
Benefits to booking these hotels can include resort credit, free breakfast, and room upgrades. Free breakfast alone can be a tremendous value at this high end resorts- like at our stay at the Ritz Carlton Oahu.
While I wouldn’t think of these credits at face value, since you’ll likely need to still shell out quite a bit to cover the rest of the stay, consider it a discount on a luxurious weekend away. You can also hunt for deals using MaxFHR.com to see the FHR/Hotel Collection Properties by city and view the full calendar of rates.
Hotel Elite Status
Receive complimentary elite hotel status. Platinum cardholders receive Hilton Gold status, Marriott Gold Status, and Leaders Club Sterling Status. Enrollment required.
Hilton Gold status is useful for getting upgraded, early/late checkout, and a daily credit ($15 per person) domestically or free breakfast internationally. Marriott Gold status benefits include the possibility of a room upgrade and a 2 pm checkout. Leaders Club Sterling Status is for Leading Hotels of the World and similarly offers free breakfast for 2 and the possibility of an upgrade and early/late checkout, as well as a Sixt Platinum Status Match.
Business: $200 Hilton Credit
The Business Platinum also offers $50 each quarter in Hilton credits ($200 annually).I’ve found this really convenient to help cover breakfast, drinks, or parking charges while stying at Hilton properties throughout the year. The credit is also sometimes triggered by making a charge at the bar or restaurant within a hotel in the Hilton portfolio, so you may not even need to have a stay booked to benefit from this credit.
Travel Benefits
- Both: Global Lounge Access (Centurion, Delta Skyclubs, Plaza Premium, Priority Pass)
- Both: $200 Annual Airline Fee Credit
- Both: Leading travel protections, Secondary Car rental Insurance
- Both: Car Rental Company Elite Status (Avis, Hertz, National)
- Both: TSA PreCheck/Global Entry Credit, CLEAR Credit
- Business: 35% back on points redeemed for flights on your chosen airline

Lounge Access
The most exciting perk for Platinum cardholders is without a doubt the airport lounge access. Cardolders can access Centurion Lounges, Delta SkyClubs (up to 10 visits when flying Delta, Main Cabin or higher), Priority Pass Lounges, and Plaza Premium Lounges. This adds up to over 1500 lounges at airports around the world.
Airport lounge access can help you save majorly on food and drinks on travel days, and can help you to truly enjoy the journey. Lounge amenities can include spas, workspaces, rest areas, and showers (much needed when connecting on long-haul itineraries). I literally get to the airport early to take advantage of the lounge perks and have a leisurely meal before my flight, all on Amex.
Access is limited to the cardholder only, though you can earn complimentary access for two guests when spending more than $75,000 annually on the Platinum card. Otherwise expect to pay around $50 per guest, depending on the lounge policy. Authorized users get complimentary access.
For more information on airport lounges and the value of Priority Pass, see my guide on getting into airport lounges. Compare lounge access with other popular premium travel cards like the Capital One Venture X.

$200 Airline Fee Credit
Annual $200 airline fee credit intended otherwise cover things like seat assignment and baggage on your chosen airline. You can choose an airline from a wide array of domestic partners, but choose carefully, as you can only change it once a year.
In practice, a wide variety of activities trigger the airline fee credit beyond incidentals, so see these data points to check what has worked in the past.
Travel Protections
The Platinum card offers some of the best travel protections in the world of credit cards. Just by being a Platinum cardholder you can benefit from emergency medical transportation coverage.
Add your trip expenses (round-trip flights) to your Platinum card in order to be reimbursed for additional expenses if there is a flight delay of over 6 hours, up to $500 per trip, max 2 claims per year, for travel delays. Platinum card also offer trip interruption and cancellation insurance (up to $10,000 per trip and up to $20,000 per Eligible Card per 12 consecutive month period). Check the terms and conditions for limits and exclusions on the travel insurance policy.
Car Rental Insurance
When renting a car and paying with your Platinum, you’ll also get secondary rental car insurance. Note that some other premium cards offer primary coverage, meaning it would not go through your personal insurance first, so you may prefer to use one of those (Venture X, CSR).
Be sure to check the covered countries (not available in Australia, Italy, and New Zealand), vehicles, and limits in the terms and conditions. Do reject the collision damage waiver (CDW) at the Rental Company counter. It does not include liability coverage. The Business Platinum specifies that the car should be rented for a business purpose.
Car Rental Elite Status
Platinum Card Members enjoy complimentary premium status for select car rental programs. Once enrolled you’ll receive Hertz President’s Circle, which has the nice perk of being able to select any car from the President’s Circle section, even above the category that you booked.
Platinum members can enroll in Avis‘s program to receive President’s Circle status, which has perks like priority service and car upgrades.
Cardholders also receive National Emerald Club Executive Status, but you may be able to get the higher Executive Elite by status matching your complimentary Hilton Gold status or Hertz Status.
Credit for TSA PreCheck/Global Entry and CLEAR
Breeze through airport security by having the dynamite combination of both TSA PreCheck/Global Entry and CLEAR. Platinum cardholders can receive up to $120 once every four years for Global Entry or $85 every 4.5 years for TSA PreCheck. Just pay the enrollment fee with your Platinum card.
If you only travel domestically, then you’ll be fine with just TSA PreCheck. Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck, but also allows you expedited entry into the United States at customs (separate line and facial recognition). The only hassle is that Global Entry requires an interview appointment, but they have since expanded into office store locations, making appointments easier to get.
Receive up to $209 each year in credits when signing up for CLEAR. Membership renews annually and allows you to skip taking out your ID and use facial recognition to get through security quickly.
Business: 35% Back (Points on Chosen Airline in Portal)
For Business Platinum cardholders, your chosen airline will also be the airline that you can redeem points for flights for in the Amex Travel Portal and receive 35% back in points. This is a great rebate that makes your points worth even more and a great option for when flights are cheap, awards are limited, or your dates are fixed.
Previously, Business Platinum cardholders received 35% back on any business or first class ticket when redeeming their points for it. That is no longer the case, it is now only applicable to flights on your chosen airline.

The Best Time to Apply for a Platinum Card
The end of the year is the best time to apply for an American Express Platinum card! In December you’ll have the chance to triple-dip or even quadruple-dip your annual credits. That means you can take advantage of credits that reset based on the calendar and not your card anniversary.
Examples of like credits that you can ‘dip’ into more by having your anniversary just overlap the calendar year include the $200 annual airline fee credit, $300 of the semiannual hotel credit, the $100 quarterly Resy credit, the $75 quarterly Lululemon credit, and the $50 quarterly Hilton credit.
A key factor to making the most of these credits is the fact that you can downgrade or cancel your card until 30 days after statement with the annual fee for a refund or prorated fee adjustment. By applying at the end of the year, you can save more $500 in credits!
Applying June would yield a similar result, although you wouldn’t be able to double-dip the airline fee credit, which is arguably one of the most easy to use.
Applying for an American Express Platinum Card (Family Rules, Credit Pull, Referrals, Varying Offers)
Most of the time welcome offers from American Express include ‘family rules.’ This means you will not be eligible for the welcome offer if you have had that same card or a higher tier card within the same ‘family.’
This means in order to maximize your earnings with American Express cards you should first apply for the lowest tier of a card family (i.e. American Express Green Card), and then work your way up (i.e. American Express Gold Card next, then the Platinum card).
If you are not sure whether you are eligible, you can still start your application. Luckily, a pop-up should appear notifying you if you are not eligible before submitting your application. After around seven years Amex can ‘forget’ you had the same card and you may still be eligible for the welcome offer.
If you are already an existing American Express Credit Card customer, then your application will likely only result in a soft pull and not a hard pull of your credit. If there is already an American Express cardholder in your household, then get a referral link from them to maximize your joint earnings, just the sure to compare the link to the public offer. Even if the don’t have the same card you want to apply for, their link can refer you to any card.
Your welcome offer may vary dramatically from based on the day, your history with Amex, or even your location. The best welcome offers are often highly targeted, so don’t be surprised if your offer is much lower than the ‘as high as’ banner. You’ll get to see what offer you are actually applying for at the end of the application process. If you login to your account, you’ll see directly what they would offer you.
Which Platinum Card is Right for You? Consumer vs. Business
The Consumer American Express Platinum card is perfect for people who don’t mind juggling a few different credits to get massive value out of the card. With a variety of dining and lifestyle credits, the Consumer Platinum card targets city dwellers who often dine out, take rideshares, use streaming services, and can make use of the shopping credits.
The American Express Business Platinum is great for business owners who can benefit from its flexible spending limit and straightforward Dell and Hilton credits. Putting high spend on the card unlocks a generous flight credit benefit, and the card still pays for itself with the airline and hotel credits.
With both cards offering credits that can outweigh the value of the card, you may consider having both in your wallet. Just consider which credits you will realistically use and whether you would be willing to essentially ‘pay in advance’ for these credits/coupons. It is always good practice to review your card usage annually to decide whether to keep or downgrade the card, but be sure to wait at least one year after applying and receiving a welcome bonus to avoid the clawback of points.
