Dreaming of a Florida Keys getaway that’s more relaxed than Key West but still full of things to do? Marathon, located in the heart of the Keys, is the perfect island escape. With turquoise water on both sides of the Overseas Highway, easy access to nature parks and beaches, and some of the best seafood in the Keys, Marathon makes an ideal 4-day base to experience it all.
My family and I have frequently visited Marathon, since it is a great base for boaters. What I love about it is that you can find unique meals that aren’t available anywhere else in the Keys, lots of casual waterfront dive bars, and ideal accommodation options for families. Despite being right in the middle of the Florida Keys, Marathon and its neighbors have retained that small fishing village vibe, making it easy to explore.
Whether you’re stopping here on a Florida Keys road trip or planning a long weekend, this 4-day Marathon itinerary has you covered — from sunrise paddleboarding to sunset cocktails.
This article is part of my complete Florida Keys travel guide, where I share itineraries, island guides, and essential tips for planning your Keys vacation.
Overview: 4 Days in Marathon, Florida
- Day 1: Arrive in Marathon & Explore the Beaches
- Day 2: Nature, Wildlife & Local Eats
- Day 3: Bahia Honda & Snorkeling or Fishing
- Day 3: Animal Encounters, History at Pigeon Key

Day 1: Arrive and Settle into Island Life
Morning: Drive the Overseas Highway to Marathon
Start your adventure with one of America’s most scenic drives — the Overseas Highway. Whether you’re coming from Miami or Key West, the 2.5-hour drive is filled with ocean views, bridges, and photo stops.
Make sure to pull over at Seven Mile Bridge for a stunning panorama before checking into your hotel. The restaurant Sunset Grille serves as the perfect pit stop to enjoy the view and a drink.
Sunset Grille, located at the foot of Seven Mile Bridge, is a laid-back local hangout with live music, tiki vibes, and epic sunset views. Then check into your hotel, I’ve highlighted my favorites below.

Where to Stay in Marathon
- Tranquility Bay Beachfront Resort – Spacious townhomes right on the water, perfect for families or groups. Multiple pools, a sandy beach, and a great restaurant on-site.
- Isla Bella Beach Resort – Luxury option with five pools, a private beach, and marina access.
- Marlin Bay Resort & Marina – The hidden gem that we love staying at for their boater-friendly marina, relaxed atmosphere, and amenities. Rent a townhome to truly feel like a local- if everyone had a sauna, bar, and resort style pool.
- Hawk’s Cay Resort– Family-friendly resort, complete with a kid’s club and pirate ship pool.
- VRBO– Vacation rentals are very popular in this area, and there a plenty of stunning ones to choose from. Whether you are looking for lots of space, beach proximity, or dockage, you can find it here!

Afternoon: Relax at Sombrero Beach
Head straight to Sombrero Beach, one of the prettiest beaches in the Keys. This sandy stretch is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply soaking in the sun. It’s some of the softest sand and one of the longer stretches of beach you’ll find in the Florida Keys.
It’s also a popular turtle nesting ground. From May through October you’ll find the nests marked out so they are protected from human interference. If you’re lucky, you might see the hatchlings, but they generally emerge at night when there is better protection from predators and make it to the ocean by following the moonlight.

Paid Parking runs the length of the park. The park also has a playground, several pavilions/huts and restrooms. There is no admission charge.
Bring a picnic or pick up lunch from Keys Fisheries, a local favorite for lobster reubens and fish tacos. For an especially Floridian beach lunch, just grab a pub sub, a custom sub sandwich from Publix, while you grab your fruit and drinks.
Evening: Authentic Cuban Food at La Niña
La Niña is a staple in Marathon, and honestly some of the best Cuban food you can find in the Keys (I’m Cuban so I would know). This cafeteria-style hole in the wall offers homemade food with big flavor and portions at affordable prices.
Favorites like pulled pork, shrimp creole (camarones enchilado), and flan de queso make up the perfect meal. Then we always finish it off with a shot of cuban coffee!
Skip the hassle of looking for flights! Use my Award Booking Concierge Service. I’ll find the flights on points and let you know exactly how to book. As an experienced traveler, I also build out custom itineraries (with or without points) that let you enjoy the trip without the planning.
Day 2: Marine Life, Nature & Local Flavors
Morning: Visit the Turtle Hospital
Start the day with a tour of Marathon’s famous Turtle Hospital, where injured sea turtles are rescued and rehabilitated. It’s both educational and heartwarming — a must for all ages.
Admission is $35 and reservations are recommended as the 90 minute guided tours are on a set schedule.
Everyone that visits always raves about the experience, which give’s you a behind the scenes look at the rehabilitation center. What’s better than seeing sea turtles that are getting a new lease on life?

Late Morning: Crane Point Hammock Nature Trail
Next, head to Crane Point Hammock, a 63-acre tropical preserve with walking trails, a wild bird center, and a small history museum. The history museum does not have a charge to enter, and there you’ll see a 600-year old canoe, pirate ship remnants, and other artifacts.

Adult admission is $17.95 (child $9.95), and allows you to walk the trails and get a fish pedicure by dipping your feet in a tidal pool where tiny fish will nibble your feet to perfection. The property also has the oldest house in the Keys (outside of Key West), the Adderly House.
You can also choose to do the full day kayak rental package here (includes snorkel gear and admission). This is great for avid birders and snorkelers, but if you are more casual about water sports, then hold off till our visit this afternoon to the state park.

Lunch: Tropical Vibes at Irie Island Eats
Grab lunch at Irie Eats, one of the best spots on the island for breakfast and lunch. Irie Eats focuses on fresh, healthy food in a tropical garden setting. The front area has a great selection of local baked goods, coffee drinks, and breakfast offerings.
Off to the sides, it’s essentially a mercantile shop with a selection of fresh fruit and unique sauces, products, jams, etc. Venture a little further in and you’ll see the food truck serving up savory meals like jerk chicken, mango BBQ ribs, wraps, and tacos.

Afternoon: Paddleboard or Kayak at Curry Hammock State Park
Now that you’ve refueled, burn off some energy at Curry hammock State Park. This park has had some recent enhancements that make it a great place to visit. The fresh sand on the beach and the way it naturally breaks off into cove like sections make it feel like you have it all to yourself.

The campground is right by the water, with some sites even having water views, so this is a great place to bring an RV or camp. The covered picnic areas are large and there is even a swing set for kids.
Rent a kayak or paddleboard from their self-service station to do the 1.2 or 1.6 mile loop around the key and its neighbor. You’ll likely spot fish, rays, and maybe even manatees.
I was really impressed by my last visit here, as it was clearly clean, well-kept, and visitor-friendly. Definitely not something that can be said about several other state parks in the Keys.

Evening: Elegant Dinner at Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House
For a classy dinner go to Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House. Excellent service and a menu of steak, seafood, and sushi. It always feels like a treat to visit, with white table cloths and decadent meals, including desserts like the banana split ball that has hot caramel poured over tableside and a creme brûlée that is caramelized right in a pineapple.
Happy hour is daily from 11:30 am to 6 pm, perfect to grab a glass (or bottle!) of wine and an appetizer before your meal.

Day 3: Bahia Honda & Snorkeling or Fishing
Option 1: Full Day at Bahia Honda State Park
Drive 25 minutes south to Bahia Honda State Park, known for its crystal-clear water, snorkeling, and old bridge views. Pack a picnic for a full day of fun here. Take the morning or afternoon snorkel tour (9:30 AM, 1:30 PM) to see the beautiful coral reefs that lie off shore. They’ll take you to Looe Key, which is one of my favorite snorkel spots in the Keys.

This is one of the few parks in the Keys that is actually large enough to ride a bike around, which I recommend doing to explore all the different areas of the park and the various beaches. You can rent one in Marathon or Big Pine and bring it along with you. Kayak rentals are available at the park if you prefer exploring by sea. Either way, the park is still quite walkable without renting gear.

The real star anyway is the beach, one of the best in all the Florida Keys, with the unique view of both the old and new seven mile bridge. Speaking of stars, if you camp here then you can stay late and stargaze!
Option 2: Half Day Snorkel or Fishing Trip from Marathon
If you prefer to stay closer to Marathon or just spend half the day out on the water so you can enjoy some pool time at the resort, there are a two popular options. Snorkel Sombrero Reef with a tour agency that meets right in Marathon.
Sombrero Reef is an also a great snorkel spot; last time I was there I even spotted an eagle ray that danced around the reef in the most spectacular way. Eagle rays are often spotted there, so there’s a good chance you’ll see one too!
For those of you that would rather see fish at the end of their line, you’re in luck because Marathon is one of the best spots for fishing in the Keys. There are lots of fishing charters available that you can call or stop by a marina beforehand to make arrangements. You could also have it all set for you by booking this well rated fishing charter that can take up to 6 guests.
Fishing charters are usually a few hundred dollars, depending on if it is half/full day or private/ shared. For those with limited budgets, but still want the thrill of the catch, get a fishing pole and some bait to join the other day-tripping fishermen on one of the designated pedestrian bridges (you’ll see them all along your drive down the Keys).
Dinner: Barracuda Grill
Barracuda Grill is offers unique dishes made with fresh ingredients in relaxed atmosphere. We went here one night when the Florida Keys Lobster House was closed for renovations, and we were blown away by the delicious food! I highly recommend it for a meal made with intention without outrageous prices. They are also open for lunch if you want to stop in for a wrap, salad, or burger.
Day 4: Animal Encounters, History at Pigeon Key
Morning Option 1: Dolphin Research Center
Visit the Dolphin Research Center in nearby Grassy Key (10 minutes away) for a dolphin encounter. Swimming with the dolphins is an unforgettable experience that leaves you in awe of their power and smarts. It was one of the first things I wanted to do when I first moved to the Keys, and it lived up to the hype!
They also offer a schedule of dolphin and sea lion performances. However, for shows I would recommend visiting Theater of the Seas in Islamorada instead.

Morning Option 2: Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters
Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters is a great stop for families with younger kids. The aquarium has several tanks that display a variety of the local sealife. Your ticket also provides access to their touch tanks, where you can interact with rays, starfish, sea urchins, and crabs.
Plan to stay long enough to get a tour with a marine biologist and your chance to feed stingrays, sharks, eels, and more. They also offer swims alongside these incredible creatures for an additional fee.
Lunch: Made to Order Neapolitan Style Pizza
Stop by one of Marathon’s newest food trucks, Leopoldo La Verace, for lunch. They are making fresh and authentic neopolitan style pizza, pasta, and meatballs.
Afternoon: Pigeon Key
Before leaving, make one last stop at Pigeon Key, a tiny island you can reach via guided tour or by walking the pedestrian bridge. Instead of walking the It’s a fascinating piece of Keys history.
Evening: Depart or Drive to Key West
If you’re continuing your trip, Key West is just an hour away — the perfect next stop on your Florida Keys journey.
