Marathon sits at the heart of the Florida Keys, making it an ideal base for travelers who want a balance of beaches, water sports, and easy drives to both Key West and Islamorada. Known for its family-friendly resorts, wildlife centers, and laid-back seafood shacks, Marathon has a little of everything.

As someone who has called the Florida Keys home for over 13 years, I’ve spent countless weekends exploring Marathon’s hidden gems — from kayaking through mangroves to sampling fresh-caught seafood at local favorites.

It’s also one of the places I love showing off most when friends and family come to visit, because it captures the true spirit of the Keys: relaxed, adventurous, and welcoming. This is everything you need to know to make sure you have a great stay in Marathon.

This article is part of my complete Florida Keys travel guide, where I share itineraries, island guides, and essential tips for planning your Keys vacation.

Guests enjoy five swimming pools, a full-service spa, marina access, and private balconies with sweeping water views. On-site dining includes Mahina, featuring elevated Keys seafood dishes, and a casual Beach Bar for poolside cocktails and snacks.

Best Restaurants in Marathon

Marathon may be known for its family-friendly vibe and easygoing pace, but the food scene here is surprisingly diverse. From high-end surf-and-turf to local Cuban comfort food, there’s something for every craving:

  • Florida Keys Steak & Lobster House ($$$) – A classic choice for an upscale dinner, this spot is best known for its perfectly cooked steaks and fresh Florida lobster. A go-to for celebrating a special evening in Marathon.
  • Barracuda Grill ($$) – A quirky, colorful bistro serving fresh seafood and creative dishes in a cozy setting. The menu changes often, but the crab cakes and mahi mahi are always crowd favorites.
  • Irie Island Eats ($) – A casual food truck-turned-local gem with Caribbean-inspired bowls, tacos, and smoothies. Perfect for a quick, flavorful lunch before hitting the water.
  • La Niña Restaurant ($) – A hidden gem serving authentic Cuban fare. Expect hearty portions of ropa vieja, Cuban sandwiches, and plantains.
  • Porky’s Bayside ($$) – A fun, open-air barbecue and seafood joint on the water. Come for the smoked ribs or fried fish, stay for the laid-back Keys atmosphere and live music.

Dive Bars & Tiki Bars

Marathon’s nightlife is low-key but full of character, with waterfront bars and friendly local hangouts. Here are some of the best places to grab a drink:

  • Brass Monkeys ($) – A dive bar with karaoke, darts, and live music. It’s casual, unpretentious, and the drinks are some of the cheapest in town.
  • Sunset Grille & Raw Bar ($$) – A Marathon staple with one of the largest tiki bars in the Keys. Come for the poolside setting, raw oysters, and a front-row seat to one of the best sunsets in the area.
  • Island Fish Company ($$) – Both a restaurant and bar, this waterfront spot is known for frozen cocktails, breezy vibes, and long happy hours that pair perfectly with the ocean view.

Top Things to Do in Marathon

  • Sombrero Beach – One of the best beaches in the Keys, Sombrero has white sand, picnic areas, and calm waters. It’s also a sea turtle nesting site during summer.
  • The Turtle Hospital – A highlight for families and wildlife lovers, this nonprofit rescues and rehabilitates injured sea turtles. Visitors can take a guided tour and even meet the turtles up close. Everyone I know that has gone here absolutely loves the experience and thinks it is well worth the cost of admission.
  • Marathon Air Museum– Check out vintage planes and vehicles at this free little museum at the Marathon Airport. It was so cool to sit right in these planes and pretend to be a passenger or pilot while watching planes take off at the same time. Open Wednesday thru Saturday, 10 AM-4 PM.
  • Crane Point Hammock Museum & Nature Trail – A 63-acre tropical oasis with hiking trails, a butterfly garden, and preserved 19th-century settlers’ homes. Great for nature walks between beach days. There is also a kayak and snorkel program for a whole day of fun.
  • Dolphin Research Center – Learn about dolphin and sea lion conservation, with opportunities to watch feedings, interactive sessions, and educational talks.
  • Seven Mile Bridge – One of the most iconic drives in the Keys, this bridge connects Marathon to the Lower Keys.

Day Trips from Marathon

One of the best parts about staying in Marathon is its central location — you’re perfectly positioned to explore both the Upper and Lower Keys on easy day trips. You can build your trip for a week in the Keys without changing accommodations. Here are some of the most rewarding excursions just a short drive away:

  • Key Largo (50 miles north) – As the northernmost island in the Keys, Key Largo is a diver’s paradise. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park offers snorkeling and glass-bottom boat tours over the only living coral reef in the continental U.S.
  • Islamorada (30 miles north) – Known as the “Sportfishing Capital of the World,” Islamorada is perfect for a charter fishing trip, craft cocktails, or dining at upscale seafood restaurants. It’s also home to family-friendly attractions like Robbie’s Marina, where you can feed massive tarpon.
  • Big Pine Key & the Lower Keys (20–30 miles south) – A quieter side of the Keys, this area is best known for Bahia Honda State Park, one of the prettiest beaches in the islands, and the chance to spot endangered Key deer wandering around Big Pine Key.
  • Key West (50 miles south) – Famous for its lively Duval Street, colorful historic homes, and nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square, Key West is a must for culture, nightlife, and history. Don’t miss Ernest Hemingway’s House or a stroll through the Southernmost Point.

Each of these destinations can easily be reached in under an hour’s drive, making Marathon the perfect jumping-off point for a wider Keys adventure.

Why Choose Marathon?

  • Best for families who want easy beach access, kid-friendly activities, and multi-bedroom resorts.
  • Great balance of luxury resorts and laid-back vacation rentals.
  • Boater’s paradise: Sandy islands explore, great fishing, beautiful coral reefs, and lots of dockage.
  • Positioned in the center of the Keys, making it easy to do day trips north to Islamorada or south to Key West.
