With turquoise water, warm sunshine, and that laid-back island vibe, the Florida Keys are a dream destination any time of year. But depending on what you’re looking for — whether it’s calm weather, fewer crowds, or the best deals — some months are definitely better than others.

I’ve lived in the Florida Keys for over a decade, and know that the weather can dramatically affect the activities that you are able to do here.

The pleasant weather of the winter and spring months makes it a perfect escape for camping, kayaking, and other outdoor activities. The summer and fall months can be hot, humid, and have scattered showers, but overall it is the best time to get out on the water for snorkeling, diving, and fishing.

The risky part of hurricane season can be September, but you should keep an eye on tropical storm activity through the summer. The good thing is you’ll often have more than a week’s notice to reschedule accordingly.

In this guide, you’ll find the best time to visit the Florida Keys based on weather, crowds, prices, and seasonal events. I’ll also share month-by-month insights to help you plan the perfect trip — whether you’re chasing winter sun or a summer snorkeling adventure.

This article is part of my complete Florida Keys travel guide, where I share itineraries, island guides, and essential tips for planning your Keys vacation.

Overall Best Time to Visit the Florida Keys

The most popular time to visit the Florida Keys is between December and May when the weather is warm (mid-70s to mid-80s °F), humidity is lower, and rainfall is minimal. This is also peak season, with local events like the Key West Food & Wine Festival and the Marathon Seafood Festival.

If you want fewer crowds and lower hotel prices, May and early June are ideal — right before hurricane season starts and temperatures heat up. It’s warm enough for even Floridians to get in the water, but not so warm that you can only be outside if you are in the water.

The only time I wouldn’t recommend coming to the Florida Keys would be in September. There are typically major storms this time of year, it’s particularly hot, and many restaurants and close this month since it is slow.

Winter (December – February): Peak Season Paradise

Best for: Perfect weather, festivals, and escaping the cold

Pros: Ideal weather, lots of events, best for sightseeing
Cons: Highest hotel prices, crowded attractions

Winter is the most popular time to visit the Keys — and for good reason. Expect blue skies, gentle breezes, and low humidity. It’s the perfect time for beach days, boating, and exploring historic Key West without breaking a sweat.

Most days are sunny and in the mid 70s. The water stays at about 70 F as well, making it a crisp cool dip, but warmer than anywhere else stateside. A light wetsuit is recommended if scuba diving to make it more comfortable.

Northerners and Canadians often come to spend a few months down in the Keys while frigid temperatures batter their other homes. We call them snow-birds as a it’s like a wave of mass migration every season. For that reason, you’ll often see higher prices and lower inventory on hotel rooms and vacation rentals.

It’s a busy time all around, so I recommend making dinner reservations (there’s only a few restaurants in each town). Try to coordinate your visit with one of the major winter events like the Nautical Flea Market or one of the food festivals.

December Events:

January Events:

February Events:

  • Florida Keys Seafood Festival– Fresh seafood stalls and live music come together in Key West.
  • Nautical Flea Market– One of the most popular events in the Islamorada for shoppers and boaters. Lots of craft stalls and marine merchandise.
  • Cuda Bowl– Barracuda fishing tournament.
  • Garden Walk– Tour private gardens in Key Largo and enjoy activities at the Garden Center.

Spring (March – May): Best Balance of Weather and Price

Best for: Active travelers, shoulder-season savings

Pros: Great weather, fewer crowds, better value
Cons: Early spring breakers in March

Spring is arguably the best overall time to visit the Florida Keys. Temperatures hover in the low 80s, humidity is still manageable, and hotel rates begin to dip after Easter. During March and April many snowbirds are still here and spring break groups start to shuffle through, so the Keys remains busy.

It’s also prime time for water sports — think snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding. It’s great weather for being outside doing activities, eating at one of the many waterfront restaurants, and exploring the state parks. Some showers may start to come through in May, but they are usually very short bursts in the afternoon.

There are a number of popular events like then Marathon Seafood Festival, the Seven Mile Bridge Run, and various fishing tournaments.

March Events:

April Events:

May Events:

Summer is the peak time for boating and hitting the Islamorada sandbar.

Summer (June – September): Hot, Humid & Laid-Back

Best for: Divers, budget travelers, and families

Pros: Fewer crowds, clear water, best deals
Cons: Heat, humidity, and potential storms

Summer in the Keys is steamy but fun if you don’t mind the heat. Afternoon showers are common, but they usually pass quickly. Hotel rates drop significantly, and the water is clear — perfect for diving and snorkeling.

Long days out on the sandbar is what locals think about when summer rolls around, with its long days and warm waters. Tourism starts to slow and shifts to becoming composed of South Florida natives doing weekend trips.

Mini lobster season is a huge draw for anyone who knows someone with a boat. It’s the one time a year where anyone with a license can go out and hand catch lobsters. No stone is unturned while searching for these sea bugs, but the reward is delicious!

Start to watch out come September though, hurricanes tend to come through and locally owned businesses close for the month in response to the slow season. Expect less locals around as we travel to cooler areas to take advantage of the last of summer. Hurricanes don’t usually stop us here for more than a day, but can mean that conditions on the water are not good and tours will be canceled.

One of my good friends had an outdoor wedding in Key Largo a few years ago in September and while the party wasn’t ruined by the passing showers, her grand boat entrance was. Keep in mind to be flexible and prepare for the worst if hosting an event in late summer.

June Events:

  • Coralpalooza– A flurry of reef-saving activities to support coral reefs worldwide.
  • Key West Pride Week– A week of parades and activities representing the LGBTQ community.

July Events:

  • Key West Mermaid Festival– Celebrates the enchantment of mermaid folklore with special events.
  • Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks- Displays throughout the Keys. For Key Largo, the main show is from ReefHouse.
  • Key Lime Festival– Competitions, a Sip & Stroll, baking classes, and pies- all centered on this unique little citrus.
  • Underwater Music Festival– Divers and snorkelers take part in a unusual soundscape annually at Looe Key Reef, thanks to special speakers blasting tunes underwater.
  • Mini Lobster Season– Get out on the water and catch your limit of lobster (check latest FWC regulations). Draws huge crowds from South Florida looking to score big.
  • Hemingway Look-Alike Contest– See a sea of bearded men compete for the annual title and cheer on your favorites at this fun weekend event.

August Events:

  • Rum Fest Key West– Dinners, parties, and tastings- all about our favorite pirate spirit!

September Events:

Fall (October – November): Quiet & Affordable

Best for: Peaceful getaways and low prices

Pros: Low rates, fewer tourists, pleasant temps
Cons: Occasional storms, some businesses may close briefly

Fall is considered the low season due to hurricane risk, but it’s still a great time for a tranquil vacation. The weather cools slightly, and you can often score major hotel deals. Just keep an eye on the forecast — travel insurance or refundable bookings is smart this time of year.

Some business remain closed thru October because of other being slower season. Fall here in the Florida Keys is basically an extension of late summer. Fantasy Fest is the key event in the Keys around Halloween time. In short, it consists of a lot of body paint and very little clothing in the biggest party town, Key West.

Only in November do we start to expect more frequent cold fronts and the weather starts to shift to drier conditions.

As I’m writing this in the beginning of November, today was our first cold front with temperatures in the 50’s, two days ago I was swimming in the pool, and tomorrow I could be back to wearing shorts in 75 degree weather. So be sure to pack both a sweater and a swimsuit for the Florida Keys in November.

October Events:

  • Key West Fantasy Fest– The craziest clothing optional Halloween party you’ll ever go to.
  • Stone Crab Season– Set and monitor your traps to get fresh stone crab claws (check FWC regulations).

When to Avoid the Florida Keys

There’s really no bad time to visit — but if you’re not a fan of heat or humidity, late August through September can be tough. This is peak hurricane season, and while storms aren’t guaranteed, it’s smart to stay flexible and insure your trip.
