The Amalfi coast would have to top my list of favorite places, and for good reason. With cliffside towns leading down to the beach, a volcano on the horizon, and roman ruins within a short drive, this area in Italy is hard to beat!
We made it there via our cruise port of Naples and arranged a day long excursion to the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. While Pompeii is a must-do and really changes your perspective on modern day living conveniences and the delicate nature of our existence, I decided the Amalfi Coast was where I would love to come back again and again.
We stopped at various lookout points along the winding road, but only had about two hours to explore the town of Sorrento. It was perched on a mountainside overlooking a sandy beach with turquoise waters. It took a lot of self-control to explore the rest of the town and not just go down the steps (or elevator) to hang out on the beach for the rest of our time there, but you could certainly do that too.
We ended up finding some of the best shopping finds on our trip while here, since all the streets were lined with beautiful little shops. For lunch we gladly stuck to the classics, the famous lemonade that the area is known for and pizza, along with some much appreciated free little extras, like ice cream and other snacks. We made it back a little late to catch up with the tour group, but it was worth every extra minute there.
