The first thing to do before going abroad is to become familiar with the maps of the cities you are visiting. For example, know an estimate of the time it takes to get from one attraction to another so you can judge distance better by researching on google maps beforehand.
Once you arrive, go ahead and grab a city map as well as a guide to the public transportation system. It is always great to have these on hand for when you don’t have signal. However, be careful about when you pull these maps out since most of the time you will not want to look like a vulnerable tourist.
One of the most important things to have though is the right attitude. You should never be afraid to ask someone for directions. Locals will typically try to help you out and it is especially good to ask ticket booth personnel or even waiters before you leave a restaurant. It is always good to start out with the proper greeting and it typically helps if you at least try to speak the local language. I found these tips were especially important in France; you are the one that looks rude when you demand directions before even saying “Bonjour!” Keep these tips in mind and you will be well prepared for a bon voyage!
